Student Protection covers four key areas:

  • Contents cover – furniture, clothing, books, kitchen equipment and personal belongings in your room
  • Gadget cover – laptops, smartphones, tablets, headphones, cameras and more
  • Key cover – replacement of lost or stolen keys and locks
  • Tuition fee protection – your fees refunded if illness or injury forces you to leave your course

All plans can be tailored — mix and match the cover you actually need.

Our gadget cover protects: laptops & MacBooks, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, portable speakers, headphones & earbuds, cameras, gaming devices and other portable electronics. Cover includes accidental damage, theft and liquid damage.

Yes. Our gadget cover is worldwide — protecting your devices in lectures, libraries, coffee shops, on public transport and when travelling abroad. You're not just covered in your room.

Tuition fee cover pays back your tuition fees (up to the policy limit) if a serious illness, injury or mental health crisis forces you to withdraw from your course or take a leave of absence. It directly protects the biggest financial investment of your student life — your degree.

To claim, you'll need a medical certificate from your GP or specialist and confirmation from your university that you've had to leave or defer.

Yes. Mental health conditions that prevent you from continuing your studies are covered, subject to medical certification. We believe mental health deserves the same protection as physical health — and with 1 in 4 students experiencing mental health difficulties, this matters.

Our key cover pays for the cost of replacing lost or stolen keys, including the cost of changing locks if required for security. This covers accommodation keys, car keys and bicycle locks. Simply report the loss and submit your receipts.

Possibly, but often very inadequately. Most home insurance policies include only a small sub-limit for students away from home — typically 10-15% of the total contents sum insured — and frequently exclude gadgets, cover away from the room, and have high excesses. A dedicated student policy is built around your actual needs.

Standard exclusions typically include:

  • Items left unattended in a public place
  • Intentional damage
  • Pre-existing damage at the time of taking out the policy
  • Theft not reported to police within 24 hours
  • Items exceeding the single-item limit (unless separately specified)
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdown (gadget cover covers accidental damage, not manufacturer faults)

Full exclusions are clearly listed in your policy wording. We never hide surprises.

Yes. All our plans cover students in university-managed halls of residence as well as private rented accommodation, shared student houses and flats.

Absolutely. Student Protection is available to both UK domestic students and international students studying at UK universities. We understand that international students often arrive with high-value electronics and belongings, and may not have the safety net of family nearby — which is exactly why we're here.

You can get covered from day one — even before you move in. We recommend sorting your cover before freshers week so everything is protected from the moment you arrive. Cover can start from any date you choose.

Our standard policies run for 12 months. For shorter-term needs, contact our team and we'll explore the best option for your situation.

Our plans start from £249 per year for essential contents cover. A comprehensive plan including contents, gadgets, key cover and tuition fee protection starts from £349 per year. See our pricing page for full details.

Standard plans cover single items up to £1,500. If you have items worth more — a professional camera, high-spec MacBook or designer jewellery — you can add specified item cover for those individual valuables at an additional premium.

Yes. You have a 14-day cooling-off period from the start date, during which you can cancel for a full refund. After this, you can cancel at any time and receive a pro-rata refund for the remaining term, less a small administration fee, provided no claims have been made.

Claims can be submitted:

  • Online – via your secure policy portal, 24/7
  • By phone – via our dedicated claims line during business hours
  • By email – claims@studentprotection.co.uk

We aim to process straightforward claims within 5 working days. You'll need proof of ownership and, for theft, a crime reference number from the police.

Depending on the claim type, you'll typically need:

  • Theft – police crime reference number, proof of ownership (receipt, photos)
  • Accidental damage – description of incident, repair quotes or photos
  • Tuition fee claim – medical certificate, letter from university confirming withdrawal or deferral
  • Key loss – receipts for replacement keys/locks

Yes. Most claims have a standard excess of £50 — this is the amount you contribute towards a claim before we pay the rest. The excess helps keep premiums low. Gadget claims carry a £75 excess. Tuition fee claims have no excess.
